David Marpoondin grew up and went to school in Aurukun. He was born on Thursday Island but moved to Aurukun when he was a baby. His father was working on the boats around the Thursday Island region when his family moved to Aurukun. David learnt about the ancient practice of carving totemic figures and animals by looking at the old people who were more than happy to pass on their knowledge to him. David has been practising as an artist for over 20 years.
