📣 A change in leadership at Melbourne Art Fair

After 7 years at the helm, Melbourne Art Foundation CEO Maree Di Pasquale today announces that she will leave the role to explore the next phase of her career.

Maree has led the Melbourne Art Foundation through a period of dynamic development, spearheading the revitalisation of Melbourne Art Fair, the introduction of new cultural fairs to the organisation’s portfolio, and the expansion of its commissions and grants program.

The Melbourne Art Foundation Board thanks Maree for her longstanding commitment as CEO. At the same time, the organisation is thrilled to announce the appointment of Mary Wenholz as incoming CEO, commencing in the role 2 September.

“Under the leadership of Maree Di Pasquale, Melbourne Art Fair has developed into one of the region’s most prestigious art fairs and a progressive forum for art ideas”, states Peter Jopling AM KC, Chair of the Melbourne Art Foundation.

“Our thanks go to Maree for her immense personal commitment, her uncompromising vision and her notable successes in the strategic positioning of Melbourne Art Fair and new cultural initiatives and programs introduced under her direction, including the William Mora Indigenous Art Centre Program, expanded MAF Commissions program, the 𝘉𝘌𝘠𝘖𝘕𝘋 installation sector, and international moving-image program 𝘝𝘐𝘋𝘌𝘖.”

Peter Jopling adds, “On behalf of the Melbourne Art Foundation Board, I am delighted to be welcoming Mary Wenholz to the role of CEO. We are confident that Mary’s commercial and arts industry experience, and extensive relationships within Australasia’s cultural sector, will be instrumental in further developing the Melbourne Art Foundation and delivering on the organisation’s plans for growth.”

Currently exhibiting until 3 August, @fineartssydney (Gadigal Country) presents
a group exhibition centering on sculpture by Francis Upritchard, Hany Armanious, Fiona Connor, and Ricky Swallow.

Connor’s work is often to do with communities of people and use of the built environment. Her work uses sculptural form to refer us to items or places elsewhere, while Upritchard's work draws from figurative sculpture, craft traditions and design, with references from literature and history.

Currently exhibiting at @apy_ac_collective's Naarm/Melbourne gallery, 𝘕𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘵𝘫𝘢 presents a new exhibition of men's artwork. Ngura Walytja translates from Pitjantjatjara to English as meaning someone's own place, and a place that one belongs to. The two meanings are inseparable.

Featured artists include Frank Young, George Cooley, Keith Stevens, Eric Barney, Antama Baker, Keith, Minunga, Lydon Stevens, Shane Brown, Walli Lehman, Aaron Ken and Taylor Cooper.

@marsgallery presents 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘺-𝘉𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘺 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴, a pop up exhibition opening tonight at @missmidgleys in Meanjin/Brisbane, only until 20 July.

Situated in heritage accommodation, MARS Gallery's pop-up undertakes the challenge of working outside of the gallery's white space to create a show-stopping installation in an apartment. The exhibition features works by Atong Atem, Kenny Pittock, Hannah Bronte, Freda Davies, Brodie Kokkinos, Cameron Robbins, Scotty So, Kate Lewis, Chantel de Latour, Miranda Hine, Jenna Lee, and Emil Cañita.

Building on the soaring success of the 2024 Fair and its move to a new annual summer model, the Melbourne Art Foundation is thrilled to announce the appointment of prominent artworld figure Melissa Loughnan as Fair Director of Melbourne Art Fair.

Melbourne Art Foundation CEO Maree Di Pasquale says: “This appointment demonstrates our commitment to delivering the highest standard of commercial art fair that the region has known. Melissa’s curatorial expertise and extensive relationships within the Australian and international collecting community will be instrumental in further delivering on Melbourne Art Fair’s ambitious plans as the dominant Australasian art fair.”

Commencing the position in late-August, Melissa Loughnan says: “I am honoured to be taking up the role of Fair Director for the prestigious Melbourne Art Fair. It is an event of great cultural legacy, and I look forward to leading its direction in this new and ambitious chapter, with the support of the Melbourne Art Foundation board and our vibrant arts community.”

Previously, Melissa founded the legendary gallery Utopian Slumps, and has provided public and private art advisory and freelance curatorial work since 2015.

Created during her time in Cornwall earlier this year for an artist residency at The Porthmeor Studios, Renée Estée presents 𝘚𝘢𝘥 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘋𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘖𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴, 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴, an online solo exhibition with @comagallery (Gadigal Country/Sydney) until 3 August.

Intimate and deeply introspective, these works on paper are like pages torn from Estée’s personal diary – transcribing the tales and whispers of mermaids, giants and pirates, entwined in Cornish history and popular culture.

The works in Lee Bethel's 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 are like a register, taking stock of what is lost, with a refusal to be forgotten. She offers sustenance with insistent femaleness, an appreciation of pattern without prettiness and a lushness that forces structures to expand and take new forms.
