Cheolyu Kim
Korea South
South Korean artist Cheolyu Kim uses his archival pen works to examine the blurred frontier between perceived reality and fantasy. Working on paper and wood in particular, his practice is informed by his complex childhood, growing up on the border of North and South Korea known as Gosung. During his upbringing, he observed the unique fauna and flora within his village while also noting the common occurrence of air balloons carrying political propaganda surrounding his space. Mimicking these observations, his works focus on shape, tone and varied perspectives intricately formed by his pen applications.
