Beijing-based artist Jin Sha is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink painting, intertwining traditional Gongbi techniques with a contemporary twist. Challenging notions of identity, power and temptation, Sha adopts traditional portraiture while omitting the human subjects to create absence. Incorporating motifs from eras such as the Renaissance or religious symbolism, he provokes viewers to fill the void and hence question ideas of canonical Western art and the sacrifice of individuality through Gongbi methodologies.
