Stephen Benwell

Australia

D.O.B: 19/04/1953

Stephen Benwell is one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed contemporary ceramicists, whose trailblazing approach to the medium heralded him international acclaim. For the last decade Benwell has primarily focused on a series of ceramic statues – first approached through an investigation of 18th century figurines and later developed to incorporate the poise and grandeur of Greco-Roman statuary. Benwell's figures subtly illustrate the image of the male nude and the nature of contemporary desire, situated within the traditions and images of masculinity. These works are enlivened by a painterly touch, illuminated in chalky, pastel hues.
