Australian artist Tomislav Nikolic has been exhibiting with Fox Jensen/Fox Jensen McCrory since 2012. He was awarded the Bulgari Art Award in 2017 which included a residency in Rome. Nikolic’s works are included in public, private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally and can be found in the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki in New Zealand. His paintings offer a multitude of contradictions. Their respect for precedent is signaled overtly in their enthusiastic adoption of the ‘garb’ of history painting. More often than not the frame itself is co-opted into an extended composition that sees each aspect of the object – linen, paint, marble dust, gilding, framing, colour, glazing as having a quality that contributes to the cumulative character of the object. This communal approach to the whole makes strikingly evident the adage that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".
