Jess Johnson's work reflects ideologies of technol

Jess Johnson's work reflects ideologies of technology and flesh, both ancient and futuristic. Extending into installation, video, VR, and fashion, her fictional world is initially developed by hand through her drawings.

Her complex drawings combine references to classical mythology and cult science-fiction with her personal troupe of humanoid characters into portal-portraits of another world.

@darrenknightgallery (Gadigal Country/Sydney) returns to Melbourne Art Fair 2024, presenting works by Jess Johnson and Ronnie van Hout. The Fair takes place at the bookend of the Victorian summer from 22 - 25 February at @mcec. Tickets are available at the link in bio 🔗

Curating a solo presentation of new works by Argen

Curating a solo presentation of new works by Argentinian artist, Ariel Hassan, MAF welcomes @gagprojects to the Fair in 2024.

The exhibition's title, 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦, is taken from chapter 37 of the 道德經 Daodejing by 老子 Laozi. The sentence can also be found on one of the assemblages compiled from fragments, scales, shards or puzzle pieces, which hold the planet together as tectonic plates, and eventually shatter it.

Along with the fragment text panels, @hassan_hassan_raw will show work from his 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘧𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘢 (eating humans) series. A current and ongoing series of detailed, often large and almost monochromatic paintings, 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘧𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘢 references the 'Manifesto Antropófago' published in 1928 by writer Oswald de Andrade, a key figure of Latin-American Modernism. “Tupi, or not to Tupi: That is the question“ – is the second sentence of the manifesto. Andrade offers Shakespeare up to the ritual cannibalism of the native tribe of the Tupi. Through the works, remnants of postcolonial, post-digital and post-discoursive worlds collide and produce a new visual universe.

Until recently, Matilda Davis has created painting

Until recently, Matilda Davis has created paintings at an intimate and small scale. Her exhibition at Melbourne Art Fair in 2024, presented by @futures_gallery will be her first solo show of large paintings.

Providing immersive encounters, @tildy_davis' paintings are personal constructions, imbued with peculiar characters, lush darkness and latent narrative. Extending from the magical realism genre, complex psychological landscapes composed of particular lexicons come together with forms of molten fluidity.

@drink_water_james's work has been included in exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally in Berlin, Leipzig and London. He has been awarded the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship (2014), the John Olsen National Art School Life Drawing Prize (2002) and has been a finalist in the Wynne Prize, Sulman Prize, John Glover Art Prize, Paddington Art Prize, Doug Moran Portrait Prize, Dobell Drawing Prize and the Salon de Refuses.

Tia Ansell’s intricately patterned weaving-paint

Tia Ansell’s intricately patterned weaving-paintings reference the grids and geometries in our urban landscapes. Through an idiosyncratic coding system, @tia.ansell translates the gridation and light patterns of her everyday surroundings into cotton, silk and bamboo weaves produced on her shuttle loom. The constraints of the weave regulate the design possibilities and organise space. Influenced by the art movements of Constructivism and Bauhaus, her practice is interested in the geometries of mass production afforded by industrialisation.
