Stieg Persson has been exhibiting with Anna Schwartz Gallery for 40 years with a practice that investigates the contemporaneity of painting. His early style is characterised by a monochromatic palette and flow of mark making: arabesque to calligraphy and text, while later works are more abstract. Persson also incorporates appropriated imagery, Rococo influences and graffiti gleaned from Venice to Melbourne. In combining these elements, Persson investigates the free interplay between abstraction and figuration in the service of cultural commentary.
