WATCH | Hannah Gartside on Creating Her ‘Bunnies in Love, Lust and Longing’

Presenting with Tolarno Galleries (Naarm/Melbourne) at Melbourne Art Fair next week, Hannah Gartside speaks on her approach to making as ultimately rooted in articulating emotions. In expanding her series, Bunnies in love, lust and longing, Gartside transforms vintage gloves from her vast collection into small bunny sculptures which call on the viewer to empathise, opening a portal into their own longing, desired and sometimes buried feelings.

Yona Lee’s 2025 Commission for Melbourne Art Fair, 𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘚𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘱𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, had visitors in awe of her playful and absurd, and at times authoritarian structures. Here, Lee questions what it means to make sculpture from found objects in the networked digital age, one where the Internet of Things — such as Smartphones, Smart Homes, and Smart Cities are increasingly pervasive.

📣 APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2026 COMMISSION 📣

Melbourne Art Foundation is thrilled partner with @acmionline and @artbankau and to unveil a new $60,000 moving image commission to premiere at Melbourne Art Fair 2026.

This inaugural initiative will support an Australian artist or group to break new ground in screen practice through the creation of a moving image work. After premiering at the Fair next year, the resulting commission will receive a dedicated exhibition at ACMI, before being acquired by both Artbank and the ACMI Collection.

Submissions for the 2026 ACMI + Artbank + MAF Commission are open until 7 April 2025. The winning recipient will be selected by a panel in early May.

The work embraces the notion that we are not individual entities but made of multitudes within a web of relations, decentring the idea of human exceptionalism in this epoch of climate crisis.

Fair Director Melissa Loughnan has been a long-time admirer of Diena Georgetti, ever since curating Victory Over the Sun with Helen Hughes at Utopian Slumps back in 2009. At Melbourne Art Fair 2025, @neon_parc (Naarm/Melbourne) showcased two captivating pieces from Diena’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 series, alongside works by Damiano Bertoli, Janet Burchill, and Jennifer McCamley in a curated group exhibition.

Multidisciplinary artist Mitch Mahoney focuses on

Multidisciplinary artist Mitch Mahoney focuses on the revitalisation of South-Eastern Aboriginal practices, creating cultural items such as possum skin cloaks, traditional canoes and kangaroo tooth necklaces. This year, he was the recipient of the inaugural Victorian First Peoples Art and Design Fair (VFPADF) Commission. His work, titled ‘Gurnbak’ premiered at Melbourne Art Fair 2025.

Speaking with the Fair, he expands on his practice, how he collects his materials whilst maintaining a deep respect for Country, and his hopes for the VFPADF. Read more at the link in bio 🔗
